Golden Triangle Markets

There are stalls on both sides of the highway leading through Sob Ruak / Golden Triangle, and these offer a variety of northern Thai handcrafts and clothing.

Don Sao Island Market – Laos

From the Sob Ruak / Golden Triangle boat ramps, there are long-tailed boat trips up the Mekong to the Paradise Resort and casino, and downstream to the Laos-controlled Don Sao Island markets.

The Mekong is a big river… even at times of low flows… after a brief upstream tour, its off downstream and across to Laos…

Looking back upstream towards Sob Ruak from water level gives a better appreciation of the size of the Mekong River!

There are various items of interest – some are not for the faint of heart…

Or the weak of stomach… Quite frankly, pickling venomous creatures  in cheap whisky is unlikely to improve its flavour, in my opinion…

Fake antiques, counterfeit booze and cigarettes… and of course the obligatory and ever-hopeful Viagra salesmen, help to round off a fascinating cultural experience…

Still, its absolutely not an expensive boat ride!  We paid 400 baht (US$14) all up for the trip, and there were 5 of us in the boat!
